A Moment In time
Project Description:
For this project, we were told to think of a major moment in our life that has changed us in some way. Once we had chosen this moment, we had to go as in depth as we could on it while remaining within one page making our story come alive with our words. We had to spend a lot of time refining our specificity, style, and elaboration. We were also given a challenge extension for this project, we could choose from multiple different ways to represent our story in a different way, such as; podcast, video, art piece, etc.
Key Take-Aways:
In this project, I learned the ingredients to make a good story, how writing about our stories transform it, and how narratives can help us grow as writers. First off, a good story contains the following: Setting, where does the story take place? Characters, who are the people in your story? Initializing action, what initiates the action? Attempts, what is the main character trying to do? Results, what are the results of that attempt? Responses, what is the character's reaction to the initiating action, attempts, and results? Finally, dialogue, what do the characters say to one another? All these are elements used in a good story. Second, how does writing our stories transform them? Imagine you just had an awesome experience at a water park or a traumatic experience at a club, would you want others to feel you excitement or anxiety? We transform our experience into such descriptive writing that the reader feels as though they were there, feeling what you felt. Third and finally, how can narratives help us grow as writers? Narratives can help us grow as writers by making us write more in depth and elaborating on ideas more, useful life skills.
The Writing:
What was difficult? The descriptive and staying within one page combo was the most difficult thing. I think that while it was a useful writing task, I would have felt better about staying within two or three pages. That being said, I most likely would not have made my story as descriptive as I did. I would have liked to include how the event had changed me more because I had no explanation as to how it changed me. I would also have liked to maybe choose a different moment, some moment with a more life changing event.
Personal Growth:
The most personal growth I experienced through this project was a huge improvement in my writing. I learned how to write a good story and how I can apply descriptive to my everyday writing to improve it drastically. I learned how to tell a story to engrave it in someones mind. I have improved my writing drastically, just throughout this short project and now have changed my perspective on my own writing from, "oh this is going to suck." to "this is going to be good." I am now excited to move on to the next writing projects.
